The Christ of Song of Solomon

Possible symbols if the love song concerns marriage…

1.  In the Old Testament, Israel is regarded as the bride of Yahweh (Isaiah 54:5-6; Jeremiah 2:2; Ezekiel 16:8-14; Hosea 2:16-20).

2.  In the New Testament, the church is seen as the bride of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:23-25; Revelation 19:7-9; 21:9).

3.  The Song of Solomon illustrates the former and anticipates the latter.

Possible symbols if the love song concerns dating…

1.  The shepherd pictures Christ, that Great Shepherd of the sheep (John 10).

2.  The Shulammite mirrors the church or the individual believer who is in the world, but is fully devoted to the shepherd (2 Corinthians 11:2).

3.  Solomon represents the Prince of this world, and he employs worldly pomp, power, and magnificence to advance his cause (Ephesians 2:2; Revelation 12:9).

4.  The court women represent those who admire this worldly prince and look askance at those who turn their backs upon the world and all that it has to offer in favor of an absent and, to them, unknown Beloved (1 Peter 4:4; Revelation 13:4).
